Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD)
The
NICVD was established in 1971 by the government and a dedicated
group of philanthropists. The Institution soon emerged as
the leading cardiovascular hospital in the country and catered
to every segment of society. In recent years, the Institute
has witnessed a tremendous increase in the demand for its
services. The outpatient department, built to cater to 50
patients, now sees between 1200 and 2000 patients per day
while the emergency room caters to as many as 400 patients
in a day.
Clinical
Services
The
Institute has 351 beds
with three medical wards, one surgical ward, a pediatric ward,
two Coronary Care Units and an Intensive Care Unit. Daily
OPD attendance is around
1200 Patients and an average of 300
patients are treated in the emergency unit out
of which 25-35 patients
are admitted every day. About 1200
Case Studies are carried out every year and about
675 Open Heart and 410
closed heart surgical operations are performed
in a year including coronary artery
bypass grafting, valve
replacement and repair, mitral commissurotomy and
complicated congenital heart procedures. Temporary and permanent
Pacemaker are implanted
routinely. About 400
Thallium tests and more than 10,000
Echo Cardiograms 24,000 X-rays and 2,500 Exercise Tolerance
Tests. Special follow-up clinics including
Pacemakers,
Hypertension and anticoagulant clinics are regular features.
A department of preventive cardiology provides necessary information
to patients and their families and a rehabilitation centre is being planned.
